Benin-The Benin kingdom in what is now Nigeria. Beginning in the 15th Century, when Western Europeans first discovered the people of Benin, called Bini, they were astonished by the artistry of their remarkable bronzes. Following a punitive expedition by the British in1897, bronze works of the Bini was brought to Europe, creating much excitement in the artistic arena. The Bini were descendents from the Ife, who were also known for bronzes created by the lost-wax process.
