Edo/Bini Bronze Horn

Edo State (Nigeria)
Benin

Bronze
ca. Mid 20th Century

Length: 24 inches
Aerophone - Lip Vibrated - Horn

Bronze horn from the Edo/Bini people, descendants of the founders of the Benin Empire. Benin bronzes are well known and considered some of the finest works ever created by the ethnic groups of this area. The Bini peoples would create masterpieces in wood and bronze for use in political and ritual activities. This is a very fine bronze horn with an ancestral image on top who appears to be signing with his hands. The horn has a wonderful band of tribal motifs on the bottom rim.
