Chokwe Figural Guitar

NE Angola; and NW corner of Zambia
Chokwe

Wood, String, Cowrie Shells, Leather
ca. Mid-Late 20th century

Length: 18.5 inches
Chordophone - Lute

This guitar has six strings and produces a light melodious sound when strummed. It was a traditional instrument among the Chokwe but sad to say has been replaced in the main by the western style guitar. The box is surmounted with finely carved standing male figure holding his belly. This figure is surmounted by another carved head to end the support for the strings which are held in place by twisting the strings around the pegs. The rectangular sound box is covered with animal skin held in place by small nails and decorated with cowrie shells.  This is a 20th century example of Chokwe harp-lute inspired from European guitars.
