Zaramo Friction Drum - Ikokole (#2)

Tanzania
Zaramo

Raffia Palm
ca. Mid-20th century

Length: 68cm
Idiophone - Struck Indirectly - Scrapped

This doctor blade is made from a rib (petiole) of the raffia palm, hollowed throughout its length with the exception of two ends. On one side is a series of fine serrated cuts. By scraping a hardwood stick (bopomwa), or metal ring on these incisions, the musician is about to obtain a characteristic rhythmic sound for dancing.
