Rattle (Shekere)

Kuba Horn Rattle

Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire)
Kuba

Horn and Metal Rings/Chains
ca. Early-Mid 20th century

Length: 12.5 inches
Idiophone - Struck Indirectly - Shaken

This horn rattle is from the Kuba tribe of DR Congo and would have been used as a rhythmic noise maker at celebrations and festivals. It is made from the horn of a large animal, probably a buffalo. The base has 15 double small metal rings attached – which is what makes the noise. This appears to have a lot of age and wear, the wear is especially apparent around the section about two-thirds down towards the tip, which is where it would have been held. This piece measures approximately 12.5 inches (32 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) wide. (Provenance: Former diplomat selling off his collection of rare and authentic African art)
