An authentic field collected Bamana (or Bambara) talking drum from Mali OR Nigeria called "Kalanga" Drum (double-headed/waisted). This Bambara ceremonial small talking drum, shows signs of usage that was most likely used in local ceremonies to accompany puppets and dancers. There is some illegible script on one hide. The cylindrical rim portion of the drum is covered with hand-stitched leather. The Bamana (or Bambara) people origins have been chronicled as far back as the 16th century. A people unwilling to accept Islam, their name is a synonym for "idol worshipers.
