Flute - WhistleLuba Flute (Mwana Pwo-face)Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire) Wood Length: 8 inches This wooden figural flute/whistle comes from the Luba (Bantu-speaking) people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The hairstyle and the features of the face are typical of the Luba style. They were mainly used by the hunters during a game to call his dog or to call other hunters when facing a challenge with an animal, in case he got lost or when in distress. Whistles were also used to accompany music and to rhythm dances. In some point, they were considered as part of royal insignia, and part of ritual. This carved face is that of Mwana Pwo, who is often seen in related court art. Flutes are widely traded and therefore often difficult to attribute to one group or another.
