Tanzania
Tanzania

Wood, Metal, Leather Strap
ca. Mid-20th century

Idiophone - Plucked - Lamellophone

This traditional African instrument is a Kalimba or Finger Piano. It is handmade in Tanzania, East Africa. It was field collected by David Stiffler. Small pieces of metal (soda can tin) are wrapped around the lamellae to create a buzzing sound when the metal tongue is played. Signs of usage and age are present. The leather strap was added so that the performer could carry it with them during the day.
