Pochette by Chevriere

Beauvais, France
Western Europe

ca. 1860's

Length: 260 mm

This Pochette is a fine example of the work of Claude Auguste Chevriere (also known as Agustin Chevrier or Chevry), who worked in Beauvais making this kind of instrument in the second half of the 19th century. They were intended as antiques and pieces of decoration, rather than functional musical instruments to be played. The soundboard presents evidence of woodworm damage, but that is consistent with Chevriere's style, who built his pochettes deliberately to look as antiques.
