Maya Female Whistle

Guatemala
Mayan

ca. 400 - 800 AD

Height: 7.5 inches

An exceptional Maya female figural whistle from the Tiquisate area of Guatemala. She is depicted in a seated position, and is elaborately adorned with a complex headdress, enormous ear spools, bracelets and a segmented necklace. In her hands, she is holding sacrificial objects that represent blood-soaked strips of paper. A ceremonial garland is draped over her shoulders and a large labret is attached to her chin. The whistle is hidden in her right shoulder and it emits a deep, rich tone. Minor repair and losses, strong mineral deposits and root marks. Ex Pierre Kahn collection, Miami, Florida.
