Lega Sanza 7-Keys

Southeastern DRC
Lega

Wood, iron, wire, string
ca. Mid 20th century

Height: 34 cm; Width: 18 cm; Depth: 12 cm
Idiophone - Plucked - Lamellophone

A finely sculptured figural Lega Sanza with seven metal keys (lamellae). Kneeling (pose) is an icon of respect, a test of endurance, and above all, a commitment to the way of the ancestors. The eyes are closed in the form of supplication to the heavens. The head is facing straight forward and has brass tacks evidencing ritual scarification. Bands of tightly woven string adorn the neck and raised arms. Apertures are in the abdomen and sides allow for the sound to enter the hollow cavity of the box-shaped resonator (body) and reverberate.
