Drum - Single Head

Senufo Ceremonial Drum

Ivory Coast or Burkino Faso
Senufo

Wood, Animal Hide
ca. Mid 20th century

Height: 41 inches
Membranophone - Struck - Directly

Senofu drum formerly in the collection of Dr. Neil Justin, retired anthropologist. In addition to his field work, Dr. Justin led 22 safaris in Africa and maintained an office in Tanzania. Acquired in the 1970's. This drum is classic in style and shows nice wear over wood and drumhead. The sculpture depicts a woman balancing a drum on her head that confirms the gester (thought-provoking) of service and commitment to support of the ways of the Senufo. Her carefully coiffed hair alludes to "life well lived" and identifies her as a woman of status.
