Nicoya Figural Ocarina

Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica
Nicoya

Mora ploychrome
ca. 500-1550 AD

Height: 6.75 inches

This figural ocarina comes from the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. The female figure is wearing ear spools, has broad legs (birthing position), and a wide, flat head, wrapped in a colorful turban. Dress or body paint is indicated by the interlocking patterns. Check out the rare Nicoya zoomorphic effigy drum (peccary) and ocarina (coatimundi), also in this collection.
