Olmecoid Figural Rattle

Chalchuapa, El Salvador
Olmec

ca 1000 B.C. - 600 B.C.

Height: 7.25 inches; Width: 5.75 inches

This Pre-Columbian Olmecoid rattle depicts a seated figure wearing ear spools, necklace, a loin garment, and an elaborate hairstyle. It features the distinct grin-like expression common among Chalchuapa figures, as well as fine details such as pierced/punctate eyes, nostrils and an open mouth. These are thought to be regional variations of the Olmec "baby" figure types, and are early predecessors of the later Maya figurine traditions of the region.
