Bamum Gong - Chief's Head

Cameroon Grasslands
Bamun

Bronze, Wood, Fiber
Early 20th century

Height: 69cm / Length: 16cm / Width: 14cm
Idiophone - Struck Directly

Gongs like this have an important place in West Africa. They are objects which were once used as currency and which have many ritual functions. The handle of this gong is carved with a characteristic Bamoun head, the cheeks puffed out and wearing a tall headdress. This is an old item, the metal encrusted with a fine patina. Attached handle still makes a fine "clonk" when the gong is struck.
