Flute/WhistleMayan Jaina Island Ocarina (Whistle)Jaina Islands - Yucatan Post-fire pigment in red Height: 3 inches; Width: 1.5 inches; Depth: 1.5 inches This Mayan Jaina Island hand modeled whistle was most likely intended to help the deceased call for spirits and ancestors in the afterlife. The elaborate headdress features appliqués on the front resembling large circular eyes, which may imply a representation of Tlaloc- the rain deity. The head is adorned with large ear spools, and the body is covered with a loincloth and belt with tabbed textile flaps. It is thought that Jaina figurines are portraits of the lords and ladies of Maya courts, and in the northern Maya area, many of these individuals were buried on Jaina Island, which was a royal cemetery off the coast of the Yucatan.
