Many rattles throughout Africa are hollow calabashes covered with beads or seeds and in this case, vegetable roots. They come in various sizes. It is played with the hands like a skin drum, while smaller gourd rattles are shaken and or struck against the hands in creating sounds of rhythmic patterns to accompany singing.
