Rattle (Shekere)Rattle (Net of Roots)Africa Gourd, Roots, String Large Many rattles throughout Africa are hollow calabashes covered with beads or seeds and in this case, vegetable roots. They come in various sizes. It is played with the hands like a skin drum, while smaller gourd rattles are shaken and or struck against the hands in creating sounds of rhythmic patterns to accompany singing.
