Rattle

Nootka Basket Rattle

Pacific Northwest
Northwest Coastal

Late 19th - Early 20th century

8.5" long (rattle is 6" long and handle is 2.4"); 6" wide

An unusual turn of the century basket/rattle, possibly Nootka. It is a basket woven over a crudely triangular shaped piece of metal--likely tin as it seems heavy and malleable. The handle is of the grasslike basket material tightly wound over itself. The tin has small hard objects inside which make it rattle when shaken. The simple striped design is done in red, purple, green, and black. The dyed material seems unfaded so may be of the early vegetal dyes.
