Drum

Shark Mouth Kundu Drum

Papuan Gulf
Melanesia - Papua New Guinea

Wood, Trade Store Paint
Mid 20th Century

38 inches

New Guinea carved and painted wood drum. The drum has a long tapered cylindrical form with deep cut scroll patterns and an open animal jaw (possibly a snake head) at the opposite end to the drum head. Red, white and black paint pigments accent the scrolls and jaw with braided fiber used to bound and reinforce the cylindrical body. It comes from Kikori and is typical of the style of drum from this area.
