Drum

Anishnabe (Ojibwe) Water Drum

Minnesota
Plains

Cedar Wood and skin
Early 20th century

Height: 16 inches

A carved cedar log water drum with original hide drum head. The Anishnabe were primarily located around the Great Lakes region, mostly in the Lake Superior area. They call themselves Anishinabe meaning "first men". They accept the Algonquin name "Ojibwe", but dislike the name Chippewa. Inscribed on the bottom is "Chippewa Indian Medicine Drum, Park Rapids, Minn". The Native American name "Chippewa" is more common in the United States and "Ojibwa" is predominate in Canada.
