Mandolin

Schmidt F-Shape Mandolin

United States

Early 20th Century

Best American Maker B & J New York

This B & J early American F style mandolin with flat back was mostly likely made by the Oscar Schmidt Company. B&J - Buegeleisen & Jacobson was the brand name of a well-known New York distributor during the early 20th century. During this time, the oval hole mandolins enjoyed an unprecedented popularity. One of the reason was the oval-holed mandolins produced a warmer quality of tone than their f-holed counterparts.
