Bowed Zither - "Table Violin"

Germany
Western Europe

19th Century

The bowed zither or sometimes referred to as the “table violin” is tuned backwards from a violin. In reality it is a violin for zitherists. It has 2 small round removable pegs which fit into the back, allowing the instrument to rest on a table. The left hand frets the fingerboard while the right hand bows the strings. Inscribed inside the zither: Ig. Hoh. Bucher Fecit. Vion
