Frame-Drum

Napalese Dhyangro

Himalayan Mountains, Nepal, - Tamang Tribe
Nepal

Wood, rattan, string, fiber, hide
19th century

Diameter: 17 inches

The Nepalese dhyangro frame drums were traditionally used in the Himalayas by the village shaman, or "jhankri," in various rituals. The wooden handle is carved in the form of a Nepalese phurba, or ritual dagger. When the handle is rotated, a small item attached inside, possibly a fetish, creates additional sounds as it strikes against the insides of the stretched goatskin heads, bound with bamboo "choya." An S-shaped cane stick is used to beat the drum externally.
