Violin/Fiddle

Five string violin (violin variant)

Mirecourt, France
Western Europe

Wood, maple, ebony, metal, rosewood, mother-of-pearl
1800's

This violin has an extremely long and thin peg box, five rosewood pegs, with a mother of pearl six-pointed peg inlay, curly maple ribs, and a single piece maple back. There are five metal strings and an angular tailpiece. The additional 5th string is tuned to a lower pitch extending it to a viola range. The bottom of the violin also has mother-of-pearl inlay - small circles in a pointed pattern going down toward a peg where the tailpiece attaches. The acoustic holes are stylized.
