Kemane (Republic of Macedonia)

Republic of Macedonia
Eastern Europe

Wood and horse hair
c. 2000

Similar to the violin or viola, the kemane name may have come from the name of the Turkish "kemence," meaning fiddle. It has three strings and is mostly seen in eastern Macedonia and the region of Osogovo. In the northern parts of Macedonia, it is called a gusla. This folk instrument is usually handmade and accompanies dancing and singing.
