Tambura / Tamboritza - Farkaš System - guitar

Romania
Eastern Europe

Pine and veneer wood, mother-of-pearl, bone, metal
c. Early 1900s

This Romanian tambura is a long-neck lute based on the Turkish saz, Albanian cifteli and the Bosnian sargija. Originally, these instruments had tear-drop shaped bodies, but as seen here, the guitar-shape was also produced. Tamburas made with frets in the Farkaš system are now very rare as hardly anybody knows how to play them today.
