Dayereh (Daire) - Bulgarian

Bulgaria
Eastern Europe

Wood, metal disks, goatskin

The Bulgarian dayereh (or daire ) is smaller than the Turkish daf. The membrane is made of goatskin that is stretched over a wooden ring that supports several loosely attached metal disks. When the player strikes the dayereh with their wrist and fingers, it produces short crisp sounds. Traditionally, the dayereh is a female instrument and is used on festive occasions. In particular, it is used to accompany both popular and classical music of Bukharan Jews in the Caucasus, the Balkans and many Central Asian countries.
