Rattle

Moose Clan Rattle

Village Huron, Quebec
Canadian

Moose hoof, leather
c. Early 20th century

A Moose clan rattle made from the left front hoof. Native Americans take pride in the belief they were created to serve as caretakers of Mother Earth and that all of nature has a spirit, which they viewed as a benevolent friend and ally. This brotherhood is reflected in their respect and the reverence they give to animals, which are considered guardian spirits. The Moose spirit is considered to bring joy with the accomplishment of goals and achievements. Their antlers are called “Crown of Courage.” Today, all Hoof Clans are considered good dancers and singers. They are known as the poets and musicians of their people.
