Slit Gong

Fijian Lali (wooden drum)

Fiji Island
Melanesia - Fiji

Vesi or Tavola wood
Early 20th century

Length: 20 inches; Width: 6.5 inches; Height: 6 inches

This rare Fijian lali (wooden drum/gong) was used by the Fijians to signify major events, such as, war, the return of warriors, and the arrival of strangers. Today, they are used in church and dance ceremonies. This field collected "lali" is constructed in a high canoe shaped form with adzed cross pieces left near the ends. It shows plenty of signs of use, excellent patina on the interior surface and old wear to the playing lip.
