Sitar

Calcutta, Republic of India
India

Mahogany, calabash gourds, deer horn, ebony, metal strings
c. 2014

Made by Barun Ray, son of the legendary Hiren Roy. This fully decorated sitar was one of the last made using aged wood stored by Hiren Roy.

The sitar, a plucked string instrument with raga, tala and numerous sympathic strings, is used in classical Hindustani music. Through the works and dedication of Ravi Shankar, it has become known world-wide during the 20th century. See "Sitar 19th century" for further information on the history of the sitar.
