Lute

Dilruba

Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, India
India

Wood, metal, bone, horsehair, skin
Early 20th century

The Dilruba has a sitar-like neck with 4 main strings and 18 sympathic strings which lie underneath the movable metal frets, much like the sitar. Unlike the sitar, it is bowed with a bow ("Gaz") in a manner very much like the "sarangi". The soundboard is a stretched piece of goatskin similar to what is found on a "sarangi."
