Height: 14 inches

The Han Chinese "Suona" is sometimes referred to as the Chinese oboe. It is a double-reed instrument with a tubular metal bocal and a detachable metal bell at the end. These first appeared during the late Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 A.D.), having originated in the Middle East. The term "suona" is derived from "zurna," the Arabic name for the instrument. The penetrating sound of the "suona" is ideal for festivals, weddings, funeral processions and military functions. It also serves as an important folk instrument of northern China and is commonly used in local theaters to accompany singing and dancing. The player completely covers the reeds and uses circular breathing to maintain a constant tone.
