Nicoya Ocarina (coatimundi)

Costa Rica
Nicoya

Ceramio, pigment
c. 800-1200 C.E.

Length: 4.5

An adorable polychrome ocarina from the Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica. This lovely ocarina depicts a coatimundi (a species of the coati) or the local Spanish name pizote. The coatimundi is a member of the family Procyonidae (raccoons), native to Central America, South America, and southwestern North America. The detailing is nicely executed; there are strong mineral deposits and the ocarina has a great tone when played.
