Tortoise Shell and Deer Antler
ca. Early-Mid 20th century

This Aztec Ayotl drum made from a turtle shell is played by striking the underside with a deer antler. Possibly, the two pitches sounded by playing on the head and tail ends of the underside, supported the idea of the two-pitched wooden Teponaxtle (lamellophone).
