Flute/Fife - Edgeblown

George Cloos Fife

New York
United States

Rosewood with German silver ends
19th century

Length: 17"

This Civil War-era fife has 6-finger holes and is made of Rosewood with German silver ends called ferrules. The military and marching fifes are typically a B-flat transposing instrument. Immediately following the Civil War, Fife and Drum Corps developed out of the bonds that had formed between musicians during the war. The Cloos fife was far more superior to anything they had played during the war time and became the fife of choice by these groups.
