Flute/Fife - Edgeblown

Kaval

Bulgaria
Eastern Europe

Wood, Metal
ca. Mid 20th century

Length: 25.2"

This chromatic end-blown flute originally associated with the mountain shepherds throughout the Balkans and Anatolia regions, is today played in folk ensembles throughout Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia. It is made in three sections, and tuned to D. The technique of circular breathing (simultaneously taking air through the nose, while blowing out through the mouth) is used, so that the performer does not interrupt the flow of the melody.
