China, the European concert ocarina (Italian for “little goose”) was not invented until the 19th century by the Italian Giuseppe Donati (1836-1925). These submarine/sweet potato-shaped clay ocarinas (vessel flutes) were accurately pitched and could be used to play both folk and western art music.
