Zampoñas (Andean Panpipes)

Bolivia/Peru Andean Highlands
South America

Bamboo, Yarn, Cloth
ca. Mid 20th century

Zampoñas (a Spanish term for South American Andean panpipes) consist of a series of end-blown bamboo tubes arranged in staircase fashion and bound together in two ranks. Often two or more players share the melody in what is called a 'hocket' technique. There are many types of Zampoñas found in the Andean Highlands. The one on view here is called Siku of the Bolivian Altiplano (plateau ), and is made in the most common size (Malta) in the key of G.
