Sacred Flute and Stopper

New Guinea, Middle Sepik Region
Melanesia - Papua New Guinea

Bamboo, Fiber, Paint
ca. Early-Mid 20th century

Height: 28"

Flutes like these were used in initiation and other cultural rites. They were typically made from large stalks of bamboo and played by blowing across a hole in the side of the instrument (transverse ) near the upper end. The tops of these side-blown flutes were frequently sealed as seen here, with ornamental flute stoppers. This flute depicts a stylized human image and a bird resting on the shoulders of the person.
