Bamboo
ca. Early 20th c.

52.5 cms

A professional Jiari Tozan Shakuhachi of 52.5 cms. It is made in two pieces with a middle joint called nakatsuki and is pitched in D. The top of the shakuhachi is called utaguchi (song mouth) and has a 14K gold utaguchi. The flute is made of madaké bamboo and has standard lacquered binding and red lacquer bore. The bore of this flute is in Jiari (fine tuned) style with the top width at 2 cm and the bottom at 1.5 cm. There are five nodes. This shakuhachi is clearly signed, but I could not find the maker's name on the following website: http://www.komuso.com/people/index.pl. The seller described it as a Pre-WWII instrument, estimated from the 1920's - 30's. I believe usage and patina confirms this.
