Lakota (Sioux) Spirit Drum

Great Plains
Plains

Animal hide, turkey feathers, horse hair, sinew, wood
ca. Early 1900's

Diameter: 20 inches

Lakota (Sioux) spirit drum. Old White Buffalo Drum depicting the most sacred symbols to this tribe. Blue cross symbolizes the world of Spirit, with totem animals painted (turtle, salamander, snake, and white buffalo), which reveals they appeared during the vision quest of the maker. Reverse side has red cross showing the physical world and a wide red rim border painted around the edge. Excellent craftsmanship with rawhide stretched so taut that it appears translucent.
