Northwest Coastal

Yellow Cedar
ca. late 19th century

Shaman used rattles to assist them in their ceremonial dances and curing rituals. This Haida/Tlingit Raven Rattle is carved from yellow cedar. On the back of the Raven is a human figure and a bird with a protruding tongue. Underneath is the design of a hawk (Skahemsen),with a beaked nose curving into its mouth. Among the Northwest Coast tribes, the raven was believed to have created the world and placed people and animals upon it.
