The nohkan or fue' has 7 finger holes in the front and is made of bamboo that has an interior coating of tempera paint, used to preserve and keep it from cracking. The nohkan is bound with thin lacquered strips of twisted cherry bark (kabamaki. This keyless conical bore tube has an oval embouchure hole across which the player blows. A plug is inserted at the end above the embouchure hole.
