Today, according to the regions of their origin, these instruments are known by many different names: Mbira, Mbila, Hurdy Gurdy, Marimba, Karimba, Kalimba, Likembe, Sanza, and Okeme. Larger lamellophones from Africa, also called kalimba, appear in the Caribbean Islands and are called marimbula.
